Phthalates (family)

Phthalates are a class of widely used industrial compounds known technically as dialkyl or alkyl aryl esters of 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid.

Uses: added to plastics to increase their flexibility, transparency, durability, and longevity, and used in cosmetics to add luster and texture. Used as oily substances in perfumes, additives to hair sprays, lubricants and wood finishers.

Found in: baby powder, baby teething toys, shampoo, hair sprays, nail polishes, lotions, some pesticide products.

Effects: Acute: organ system toxicity, negatively effecting the brain and nervous system. Chronic: endocrine disruptor, some reduce sperm count and quality, birth or developmental effects.
